Compassionate Communication Workshop - Saturday March 12th 11:00 - 3:00 PM at the Point Montara Lighthouse

This hands on workshop is designed to provide simple yet effective skills for communicating, especially in challenging situations. In this training participants will learn to identify blocks in communication and resolve differences in peaceful and satisfying ways. The skills explored in the workshop are applicable to all relationships from family and friends to co-workers and clients.

Developed by Nobel Peace Prize nominee and international mediator Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, Compassionate Communication (also known as Nonviolent Communication) has transformed lives around the world for over 40 years.

Ursula Duncan will facilitate this popular workshop and has trained extensively with Dr. Rosenberg. A mediator, communication coach, and Compassionate Communication Trainer, she has introduced this model of communication training to people in the Bay Area for over 7 years. Duncan believes her life was radically improved by this method and loves sharing it with others. According to her, "Compassionate Communication helps you connect in a way where everyone’s needs are met, and it applies to all your relationships—including the one with yourself."

Admission to the workshop is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. (Proceeds from the event will cover the costs of the organizers). Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance and receive the discount price by calling Coastside Peace at (650) 712-9616. The Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel is located on the west side of Highway One, at 16th Street in Montara, south of Devil’s Slide. Those attending the event should also bring a bag lunch.

We will be showing great progressive films on 3 upcoming Friday nights. Friday October 8th 8:00 PM

  • Outfoxed (2004, 77minutes) - Exposes in detail how the "fair and balanced" cable network is systematically structured to be a right wing propaganda machine. Includes internal documents and interviews with former employees that clearly show how the political spin is dictated from the top, and examines what this means for informed democracy in our country. More information...
  • Bush Family Fortunes: The Best Democracy Money Can Buy (2004, 70 minutes) - Master investigative reporter Greg Palast, shows the smoking gun evidence in many of the hidden stories of the Bush family. He shows clearly the nature of the intentional election fraud in Florida, the coverup of George Bush's military desertion, and how the Bush family's relationship with the Saudis has led to a hands-off order regarding CIA and FBI investigations of Bin Laden and other key Saudi terrorists and terror financiers. Friday October 22th 7:30 PM

  • Iron Jawed Angels (2004, 123 minutes) - An HBO film starring Hillary Swank, Angelica Huston, Frances O'Connor and Julia Ormond in a fictional account of the true story of a small group of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. The film shows how these activists dared to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920, and how they were beaten and force fed by the police for it. It's an inspiration to all and an especially poignant wake-up for the 22 million young women who did not vote in the 2000 election. More information...
  • Military Myths (2001, 28 minutes) - Young people today are smacked with military advertisements and recruiters coming into their schools and communities offering sign-up bonuses, money for education, and job training. MILITARY MYTHS takes a critical look at the military's promises. The producers contrast media representations of war and military life with the personal experiences of veterans who have gone to war. Interviews with activists and students are also presented along with statistics from the Veterans Administration, CCCO, SLDN, and recent Pentagon studies that lay clear the myths of military life. Friday October 29th 7:30 PM

  • Fahrenheit 911 (2004, 122 minutes) - What can we say--it was the progressive media event of the year and a defining moment in the modern resurgence of film as an alternative channel for news, perspective and informed commentary. Michael Moore's 911 leaves you alternating between belly laughs, jaw-clenched anger and tears of empathy as he shows a side of Bush's America never seen through the carefully controlled image machine of the corporate media. Richard Heinberg - November 7th 2003 at the Ted Adcock Center

The world is about to change dramatically and permanently as a result of oil depletion. Within the next few years, the global production of oil will peak. Thereafter, even with a switch to alternative energy sources, industrial societies will have less energy available to do all the things essential to their survival. We are entering a new era as different from the industrial one as the latter was from medieval times. Heinberg makes a compelling case for this conclusion and offers eminently sensible recommendations about how to face the social, economic, political, and individual lifestyle changes that will be imposed upon us.
